Recalling Seventy Years After The Pearl Harbor Incident, Survivors Reveal Bravery In Catastrophe
The story of Pearl Harbor may be more than a love story showed on film, brought to life by the big names of Ben Affleck and Kate Beckinsale. It is, however, a tale of love that emerged from hate.It's already been 70 years since that notorious Sunday morning of the 7th of December 1941 at a lagoon harbor on the beautiful island of Oahu, Hawaii - Commonly known as pearl harbor. Around 84,000 uniformed American military officers and personnel were on Oahu on that day. What looks like a usual, relaxing Sunday morning changed into horror.
At around 6 in the am, the Japanese carriers started the first wave of dive and horizontal bombers, and fighters. The assault crippled American ships and military installations just a few minutes before the clock hits 8 in the am. The second wave of 170 Japanese aircrafts pursued. Such was the first deliberate attack on the United States of America.
What happened that morning will eternally be remembered. The assault claimed some 2,403 lives, the majority of which are of our brothers and sisters from the military services, including 68 civilians. Sadly, the majority of the Pearl Harbor survivors currently are in their late 80s and 90s - but their stories can never be forgotten. Family and friends retell their forefathers' testimonies and vow to pass it on to the future generations.
Fast forward 70 years, only few survivors remain today with a few documentaries retelling the stories. It's upsetting to comprehend that the youth at present might just forget about what happened at Pearl Harbor, or simply never knowing it took place.
That fateful Sunday morning will forever be in our hearts. What began as hate that triggered the offense and brought the US to war ultimately turned to love as we forgave those who have wronged us and even whom we have wronged in war.
